SE·LAH (SAY-LAH)

to stop and think, to pause and reflect on the meaningfulness of what comes next:

Our Mission

Selah Dance Collective, Inc is a contemporary dance company dedicated to producing original work, creating educational experiences through performance, and maintaining a platform for community dance works and emerging artists through outreach, education, and mentorship.

About Selah

Selah Dance Collective, Inc (or Selah) creates and performs worldwide original work by artistic director and founder Meredith Ventura. Founded in 2014, Selah has captured the attention of fellow artists, presenters, and audiences with its innovative work and challenging physicality grounded by a focus on making dance more accessible and relatable to all people. Known for our personality, dynamic style, and technical versatility, Selah explores the nature of human existence through the art of movement.

As a company, we are fueled by interdisciplinary research and collaboration, especially in working with other small dance companies to produce work that draws from a wide range of influences and inspirations – from recreating Vaslav Nijinsky’s Rite of Spring to a fully customized 67-minute score, we seek inspiration from sources that speak directly to the human condition.

We are inspired by the innovative communities of Southern California and New York, which constantly ignite long-range artistic work and collaborations that reach across cities and states through technology and media. In addition to our artistic work, Selah also advocates for expanding arts exposure and dance education, working within different organizations to bring art, specifically dance, to underserved communities through adapting our evening-length performances to add educational or adaptive components.

In the past ten years, we have performed throughout the United States, including multiple tours to New York City and Los Angeles and have been invited to perform internationally in Asia and Europe. Together, we have created more than 15 individual works – including six evening-length pieces for up to 31 dancers, 10 works choreographed by our own collective members. Our work has been performed in five countries on concert stages and as invited residencies for art galleries and universities.

As we enter our 11th season, we are so grateful to continue to do what we love at home on the Central Coast and look forward to what the next decade of Selah has in store.
